A Totally Normal World

Once upon a time - and twice on Sundays.

we need to start organizing who is going to bring what.
I am thinking of making certain activities (Sarah's secret message service, Sloonan's mini golf, a possibly a jedi lightsaber picture booth, etc) low cost pay to play activities. The idea will be to try to cover some of the expenses, and if we manage to make a profit, give it to Jeff as part of the SPARC donation.
As such
1) keep receipts on anything you buy to see if we can try to get you reimbursed. If we can't do a full reimbursement, I will try to do at least a proportional reimbursement.
2) please only buy stuff for things we've talked about and ok'ed. I would love to have a $1000 Van Graf generator to play with here, but we will not make enough money to cover it, so I cannot ask anyone to buy it.
3) if you can grab it and bring it, please respond so we know

I'm busy with dissertation stuff, so I'm going to have to rely on you guys for brainstorming equipment needs. If I've forgotten about a project please add it to the list as well.

Actually, no, a tent would be out because of firecode regulations. We couldn't have it covered with a top. And although a tent frame is okay for vendors, it wouldn't really help for the light show.

We can still schedule lights-off at a particular time though if this is happening? : )

Few ideas for wall decorations: (We will need people to offer to make them, though)

-Magnetic Wall Chess
-Sudoku Puzzles on Posterboard
-Pin/Tape the Bolts on the Monster Frankenstein Game

If people are able to bring posterboard and markers and masking-tape and a meter stick so the lines are striaght, making Sudoku should be pretty easy.

does anyone have any christmas lights? they might add to the atmospere?

We've got a bag-o'-lights that will be up for grabs at the event, in addition to a bunch of neat tribe specific decorations (including what looks like a Steampunk version of a titration setup! woot!)

We have some large wall-hangings from the Wicked Inventory that might be neat. They're predominantly witches with brewing/bubbling cauldrons. But the cauldrons totally remind me of scientists mixing-up something.

I don't like this idea of charging anything for activities in our room. Why should people have to pay to do things in our party, it will just turn people away.

Reply to This

Only a small number of our activities will charge a very minimal amount. I'm thinking $1 or less (ideally, I'd love to just charge a quarter and call it the "mad science arcade").
The reason for this is we are hoping to do a lot, and are asking a lot from people in return. We are looking to do this on the cheap, but when catering to a few hundred people, costs are going to add up. You guys are my guys, and I like to take care of my people. If I had the money myself, I would reimburse you all out of pocket, and possibly give you guys something extra. We are going to have fun at this, but I don't want this fun to come at a huge financial expense. So I want to try to find ways to cover costs for you guys, and should we find a profit, hand it over to SPARC to provide for the next generation of mad scientists.
But just to clarify so there is no confusion:
Not all activities will have a charge, in fact, most won't
the money from the charged activities will go to try to reimburse both the pay to play and the free activities.
right now, I'm considering for pay-to-play
the full 18 holes of golf (somewhere between 25 cents-$1)
possibly the secret message service (5 cents-25 cents)
Lightsaber fight pics ($1, or could this be more?)
possible kirlian imager (25 cents to $1)
possible DIY electronics games (25 cents)
I intend everything else (brain games, legos, craft table, etc) to be free and open to all, but funded by the pay to play
