So it's no secret that Totally Normal is operating at an enormous loss.
That's just how it is. We haven't been making a big deal of it because, hey, with our last event, we were pretty much literally under attack from the venue itself, and we exhorted everyone's help as loud as we could. (And we got enormous support. I will never forget it.)
Because of that support, we will run Faire again, as promised. Barring, say, my getting run over by a truck. :)
Unfortunately, I went into Totally Normal with my heart more than my head. We had a lot of great ideas which might well have worked, but we were hit enormously hard by the economy - particularly in the area of vendors. And to be candid, we were burnt out going into this event. In particular, I underestimated just how quickly I would (or wouldn't) be able to recover from three months of continuously battling the hotel while putting Faire together - how physically ill I'd be at the end, how drained we'd all be.
But the main thing is the economy. Ticket response is actually very good - a fellow could always wish for more, but tickets are coming along pretty well. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't get your friends to go!)
But not so many people can afford hotel rooms, these days, and most of all, when we started planning, gas was still at about $2. Most vendors just can't afford to travel to a new event at $4 per gallon. So between the higher cost of hotel space due to fewer hotel rooms, and the event having literally a quarter as many vendors as we expected - we are in a very deep financial hole.
We will survive it, but it hurts. And I have a bad habit of not asking for help because I don't think about it. I don't mean not asking people to get tickets and hotel rooms and such - I sure do that!! -
but I tend not to ask for peoples' advice or thoughts or other assistance, because part of me automatically shifts to, "Come on, this is my problem, I don't want to bother people."
That's kind of foolish, but I still do it.
I am trying to break that habit - and so I'm creating this group.
